DESCRIPTION:A special offering from guest facilitator Sheniqua Trotman\n\n\nWHAT IS A LAYER SONG?\nA layer song is a piece of music made from several short, repeating vocal parts that can be sung at the same time.\nWe’ll begin with one simple phrase. Once that feels comfortable, another group will add a different phrase, then another, and another. Some parts may carry melody, some may create rhythm, and others may add harmony or texture.\nThink of each part as a different thread. On its own, it is simple. As the threads are woven together, they create something much richer than any one voice could make alone.\nAnd that’s part of the magic: you don’t have to carry the whole song. You only have to carry your part.\n\nWHO IS LEADING THIS LAYER SONG SESSION?\nThis gathering will be facilitated by professional vocalist and community song leader Sheniqua Trotman.\nSheniqua Trotman is a professional vocalist, community song leader, and founder of Elevated Expression, where she creates participatory singing experiences centered around connection, belonging, self-expression, and the joy of using our voices together.\nA lifelong theater kid, Sheniqua began singing at three years old and later studied musical theater before building a career as a professional vocalist. Over more than 15 years, her work has taken her from theater and choir stages to touring and background vocal work.\nBut after years spent in musical spaces where learning the notes, blending, rehearsing, and polishing a performance were often the goal, Sheniqua found herself drawn to a very different question:\n\nWhat happens when singing isn’t about performing for an audience at all?\n\nThat curiosity led her to community singing and eventually changed the way she thought about what it means to be a singer.\nToday, Sheniqua leads song circles, workshops, and participatory singing experiences around the country, including facilitating at Omega Institute and sharing music at singing gatherings and festivals. Her work brings together her background as a trained performer with the accessibility, spontaneity, and connection of community singing.\nMuch of the music Sheniqua shares is taught through oral tradition, using call-and-response, repetition, movement, harmony, improvisation, and simple musical phrases that allow a room full of people to create music together without sheet music.\n\n\nWHAT HAPPENS DURING A LAYER SONG SESSION?\nTogether, we’ll:\n• Warm up our voices and bodies through playful vocal and connection exercises\n• Learn short musical phrases by ear\n• Build songs one layer at a time\n• Experiment with harmony, rhythm, dynamics, and vocal texture\n• Sing in different configurations and hear how the music changes as new layers enter\n• Explore an interactive song where the group gets to help create the lyrics\n• Make plenty of room for play, connection, expression, and the joy of singing together\nDO I HAVE TO BE AN EXPERIENCED SINGER?\nNope! This playful, intuitive approach to singing meets you wherever you’re at in your vocal journey, and allows professional artists, former choir kids, and shower singers alike to bond, collaborate, and create beautiful vocal music as a spontaneous vocal community.\n\nTHIS SOUNDS COOL, BUT I FEEL A BIT ANXIOUS…\nWe hear you. Singing in front of people can be really vulnerable, and we make sure to honor where everyone is at. While we will encourage you to be brave and try new things, you are also always encouraged to listen to your body and draw your own boundaries, and are invited to pass or sit out and watch if a particular game or exercise isn’t for you. You will never be forced to do anything you don’t want to do!\nCircle Singing is a mistake-free, low-pressure, safe space to play and explore. The space we craft is one where we allow ourselves let go of the rules, restrictions, judgments, and fears of other group singing settings and just SING.\n\nRESPECT THE SPACE:\nArtsOnSite is a beloved venue and we want to honor them! Please be considerate of the space.\n\nPHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY:\n\nADA ramp accessible, set out 15 before each session.\n2 step walk up to lobby.\nRamp is in the hallway\nElevator available to the 3rd floor (reserved for those with physical disabilities).\nSeating available (narrow benches with no backs, folding chairs).\nBathroom is not wheelchair accessible.\nVenue prefers shoes to be removed upon entering. 🌱 🌿 🌳\n\n\nLOW-PRESSURE PARTICIPATION\nGaia Music Collective events are participatory, but low-pressure. You’ll be invited to sing along and make music with us, but we encourage you to draw your own boundaries and engage at your own pace – we pride ourselves in creating a judgment-free community where you can express yourself however feels right!\n\nLATE ARRIVALS\nWe ask that you arrive no later than 30 minutes after start time, after which we close the doors (lovingly) in order to preserve the intimacy and trust of the musical container we’re building. Thank you for understanding!\n\nCANCELLATION POLICY\nTickets are refundable up to 24 hours before the event, after which we are no longer able to offer refunds. This policy helps us keep these events financially sustainable for both our community and our team. If you RSVP but are no longer able to come, please let us know so that we may offer your spot to someone else!
